Switch Espresso

Switch Espresso has been roasting coffee since 2006 from its base in South Christchurch, building a reputation over nearly two decades as one of the city's most consistent specialty roasters with a small, dedicated team focused on ethically sourced, specialty grade beans. The company's tasting room operates from Birmingham Drive in Middleton, Christchurch, and the roastery provides cafe supply services to local businesses throughout the Canterbury region. Switch once operated its own chain of cafes but made the strategic decision to sell two of them while retaining Black Betty on Madras Street, the flagship location that continues to serve as both a showcase for the roastery's current offerings and a gathering point for Christchurch's specialty community. The decision to scale back the cafe footprint and focus energy on roasting and wholesale reflects a maturity in the business that prioritizes doing fewer things exceptionally well over spreading resources thin. Switch Espresso has weathered Christchurch's post earthquake transformation and emerged as one of the enduring names in a city whose coffee culture has been rebuilt alongside its buildings.
