This Kenya Gatagua AA is produced by the Kagaa Farmers Cooperative Society in Muranga, Central Kenya. The cooperative has 609 active members (409 men and 200 women) and operates the Gatagua washing station, originally built in the 1960s. Coffee is grown at altitudes between 1,600 and 1,850 meters on the fertile southwestern slopes of Mount Kenya and eastern slopes of the Aberdare Range. The varieties include SL28, SL34, Ruiru 11, and Batian. Processing involves same-day delivery of cherries, soaking to remove floaters, overnight fermentation, water replacement with another night of soaking, washing, then sun-drying on the ground for 6-8 hours before moving to raised drying beds for about 20 days. The flavor profile is juicy with black currant notes.
