Recreo Coffee
Recreo Coffee and Roasterie is a family owned company that grows all of its coffee on a single farm in Jinotega, Nicaragua, roasts it in house in Boston, and serves it in two cafes including the flagship in West Roxbury that opened in February 2015 and has since become known as the living room of its community. The operation is Rainforest Alliance certified and reinvests approximately one third of its profits into farm improvements and workers' education, while providing free housing, meals, education, and medical care to its Nicaraguan farm employees and their families, a commitment to the people behind the coffee that goes far beyond the industry standard for direct trade. Recreo was voted Best Coffee Shop in Massachusetts in 2019, recognition that validated a model built on the premise that controlling the entire supply chain from soil to cup produces not only better coffee but a more honest and transparent relationship between the farm and the customer. The two Boston locations and a network of wholesale partners across the Boston area now serve the roastery's beans, all of which originate from the single Jinotega farm and carry the traceability that comes from knowing exactly where every bean was grown, picked, and processed. Recreo's model demonstrates that a roastery can be simultaneously a cafe, a farm, and a social enterprise, with sustainability and community support embedded into the business rather than added as an afterthought.
