This is a coffee from Java, Indonesia, grown on mineral-rich volcanic soil. The beans are aged for at least two years in wooden barrels to replicate the original Dutch ageing process from the 16th century, when Dutch traders transported beans as ballast in ship holds. Today, this process is carefully replicated in underground wooden barrels. The result is a full-bodied coffee with spice, peppercorn, toffee, and chocolate notes.
Grain & Grind opened its first coffee shop at the start of 2018 beneath the old Victoria Infirmary buildings on Battlefield Road in Glasgow. A roaster was installed in that original shop and later relocated to Inverness, where master roaster John now hand roasts in small batches across a range of over twenty offerings. The company has grown to eight café locations spread between Glasgow and Inverness. They also run a wholesale supply business providing beans, brew bags, and equipment to cafés, restaurants, and hotels, partnering with San Remo for espresso machines and Mahlkönig for grinders.
