Alt Wien Kaffee

About This Coffee

This single-variety Arabica Castillo coffee is grown by Guillermo Alvarez on Finca San José in the Caldas region of Colombia at altitudes between 1,350 and 1,470 meters. After hand-harvesting, the coffee is washed, stored in silos for 20 hours, then fermented for three months in old rum barrels. This unique barrel fermentation process imparts an intense rum-forward aroma and Caribbean character to the coffee, making it distinctive in any brewing method.

Alt Wien Kaffee

Operating since 2000 from Schleifmuhlgasse in Vienna's Wieden district near the Naschmarkt, Alt Wien Kaffee is a roastery with deep roots in the city's coffee tradition. They roast daily in small 12 kilogram batches, and every roast is handpicked following traditional methods, yielding over 40 varieties that span strong and dry to mild and fruity. The lineup includes both Arabica and Robusta blends, with several organic and fair trade certified options among the 14 or so types of coffee available at any time. All beans are roasted naturally without additives, and there is a tasting bar where customers can try freshly roasted coffee on the spot. The roastery appeals equally to traditionalists and more adventurous coffee drinkers, and the knowledgeable baristas are known for guiding people through the range with genuine expertise.
