Alt Wien Kaffee

About This Coffee

This single-origin Arabica coffee is sourced from COCAFCAL, the cooperative run by Omar Rodríguez near Celaque National Park in the Copán region of western Honduras, bordering Guatemala. The cooperative has over 5,000 members and is both BIO and FAIRTRADE certified. Varieties include Caturra, Catuai, Bourbon, and Pacas. This is a medium-bodied coffee that is less dry than most classically roasted single-origin Arabicas, yet far from overly acidic. It performs well as espresso, filter coffee, or in a moka pot.

Alt Wien Kaffee

Operating since 2000 from Schleifmuhlgasse in Vienna's Wieden district near the Naschmarkt, Alt Wien Kaffee is a roastery with deep roots in the city's coffee tradition. They roast daily in small 12 kilogram batches, and every roast is handpicked following traditional methods, yielding over 40 varieties that span strong and dry to mild and fruity. The lineup includes both Arabica and Robusta blends, with several organic and fair trade certified options among the 14 or so types of coffee available at any time. All beans are roasted naturally without additives, and there is a tasting bar where customers can try freshly roasted coffee on the spot. The roastery appeals equally to traditionalists and more adventurous coffee drinkers, and the knowledgeable baristas are known for guiding people through the range with genuine expertise.
