Alt Wien Kaffee

About This Coffee

This is a BIO and FAIRTRADE certified coffee from the Chanchamayo province near the city of Pichanaqui in Peru, one of the country's most important coffee-growing regions producing about 40% of Peru's total harvest. The coffee comes from the Aproselva cooperative, consisting of smallholder farmers who each cultivate approximately 2 hectares and produce around 1,500 kg of green coffee. The beans are shade-grown at higher altitudes to achieve slower ripening and denser bean consistency. Varieties include Caturra, Typica, Pache, and Bourbon. The coffee features a robust, dry, nutty profile with spicy notes of nut and cinnamon, suitable for both espresso and filter preparation.

Alt Wien Kaffee

Operating since 2000 from Schleifmuhlgasse in Vienna's Wieden district near the Naschmarkt, Alt Wien Kaffee is a roastery with deep roots in the city's coffee tradition. They roast daily in small 12 kilogram batches, and every roast is handpicked following traditional methods, yielding over 40 varieties that span strong and dry to mild and fruity. The lineup includes both Arabica and Robusta blends, with several organic and fair trade certified options among the 14 or so types of coffee available at any time. All beans are roasted naturally without additives, and there is a tasting bar where customers can try freshly roasted coffee on the spot. The roastery appeals equally to traditionalists and more adventurous coffee drinkers, and the knowledgeable baristas are known for guiding people through the range with genuine expertise.
