This coffee is from the Macuba Sector in Nyamasheke district, Rwanda, grown at altitudes between 1600 and 2100 meters above sea level. It is a Red Bourbon variety processed using anaerobic washed methods. The coffee is solely produced and processed by women as part of the Rugori (Women's Crown) Gasharu Coffee initiative. Flavor notes include cherry, berries, and tea-like characteristics.
Kenny and Justin founded Coborn Coffee after a conversation in an East London pub on Coborn Road, incorporating the company in 2022. The roastery operates from Tyssen Street in Hackney as a micro roasting operation with a pointed sourcing principle: every coffee comes from a named female producer or a majority women owned farm. The decision reflects the reality that women make up the bulk of the coffee production labor force globally yet own a disproportionately small share of farms. Justin, self titled Head of Mischief, brings an intentionally joyful energy to the project. The goal is to pay farmers fairly while keeping specialty coffee accessible to the local community rather than pricing it as a luxury product.
