Alt Wien Kaffee

About This Coffee

This single-origin coffee from the Dominican Republic comes from the Barahona coffee region in the southwest of the country, specifically from the Gajo del Toro farm in the city of Polo. The coffee is shade-grown, hand-picked, and wet-processed. It is a Typica variety that grows at altitudes between 600 and 1400 meters above sea level. The coffee is characterized by being almost entirely acid-free with a powerful, robust body and dry mouthfeel. It features nutty fullness with straightforward flavor characteristics. The coffee is grown under shade trees including guava, pine, and macadamia, with the climate allowing for slow maturation of the coffee cherries.

Alt Wien Kaffee

Operating since 2000 from Schleifmuhlgasse in Vienna's Wieden district near the Naschmarkt, Alt Wien Kaffee is a roastery with deep roots in the city's coffee tradition. They roast daily in small 12 kilogram batches, and every roast is handpicked following traditional methods, yielding over 40 varieties that span strong and dry to mild and fruity. The lineup includes both Arabica and Robusta blends, with several organic and fair trade certified options among the 14 or so types of coffee available at any time. All beans are roasted naturally without additives, and there is a tasting bar where customers can try freshly roasted coffee on the spot. The roastery appeals equally to traditionalists and more adventurous coffee drinkers, and the knowledgeable baristas are known for guiding people through the range with genuine expertise.
