Hansa Ceylon Coffee
Sri Lanka
Hansa Ceylon Coffee sparked the comeback of Sri Lankan coffee production in the mid-90s when founders Harm van Oudenhoven and Lawrence Goldberg realized the wild trees in Nuwara Eliya were actually hidden gems. Lawrence, a practicing herbalist who still runs the show today, has spent decades under his belt of empowering local growers in favor of organic, sustainable farming that avoids monocultures. Coffee beans are meticulously hand-sorted at the production facility to ensure only specialty grade coffee. The beans are then roasted on a vintage 50-year-old roasting machine. We visited Hansa Ceylon Coffee in 2019 and met with Lawrence on site. You can read about what we learned in the Roaster Stories.
