This Ethiopian single origin coffee comes from the Idido Gersi washing station in the Yirgacheffe region, processing cherries from smallholder farmers cultivating at altitudes between 1,900 and 2,200 meters. The coffee features indigenous Heirloom varieties and undergoes Extended Yeast Fermentation processing, where carefully sorted ripe cherries are fermented in sealed, ventilated tanks with added yeast cultures to accelerate and intensify natural fermentation. The cherries are then sun-dried on raised African beds for up to 21 days. The result is a complex-sweet coffee with juicy character, creamy body, and flavor notes of pineapple, rum, and raisin.
Maximilian Kranz and Dominik Münstermann founded Bohnenkartell in Essen, building a cafe and roastery whose playful name, meaning "Bean Cartel," belies a serious commitment to specialty coffee. All green coffees meet the SCA Specialty Coffee standard of 80 points or above, and each batch is individually roasted on a drum roaster to preserve the unique aromas and characteristics of its origin. Bohnenkartell also offers SCA certified barista courses, cementing their role as both a quality focused roastery and an educational resource in the Ruhr Valley's specialty coffee scene.
